Ocean Economy
The provincial strategy with regards to the Oceans Economy is derived from Operation Phakisa Programme. Operation Phakisa has earmarked initiatives in support of port infrastructure; boat building & ship repairs; industry development & the provision of support to aquaculture projects: Coastal & marine tourism; small harbour and coastal development; oil & gas exploration; Research and Development.
The Oceans economy creates a platform for rural and dispersed coastal communities to tap into downstream opportunities. The Eastern Cape is South Africa's 2nd largest producer and exporter of aquaculture products - largely dominated by abalone and oyster production. The province is also the 2nd largest exporter of fish & other aquatic commodities, with aquaculture production diversifying to catfish, Kob, tilapia, oysters and mussels farming.
